Chiropractic Care As Migraine Treatment: Our Approach

Chiropractic Care As Migraine Treatment: Our Approach

Experiencing frequent migraines or tension headaches in Austin? At Austin Chiropractic & Rehab, we specialize in headache and migraine treatment for our patients in and around Travis County. If you are one of the millions suffering from migraine headaches, you’re not alone. In fact, 12% of the U.S. population suffer from migraines.

Our Austin migraine chiropractors focus on the root cause of your pain beyond the symptoms using various natural, nonsurgical treatments and therapies. We have one goal in mind: to reduce your migraine pain and improve your daily function.

Causes & Triggers of Migraines

The cause of migraines isn’t fully understood. Nevertheless, doctors believe imbalances in certain brain chemicals like serotonin, genetics, changes in the brainstem and environmental factors may play a role in causing migraines.

Moreover, migraine attacks can be triggered by a variety of factors, which include:

Hormonal changes. Shifts in the hormone estrogen can bring on migraines in women. They are more common near menstrual periods and worse between puberty and menopause. Moreover, oral contraceptives and hormone replacement therapy are also known triggers.

Emotional stress. This is one of the most common migraine headache triggers. During stressful times, certain chemicals in the brain are released that set off your “fight or flight” response. These chemicals can trigger a migraine. Anxiety, worry, and fear can create muscle tension and aggravate a migraine attack even more.

Specific Foods. Certain foods such as salty, processed foods, aged cheese, artificial sweetener aspartame, chocolate, fermented foods and foods with nitrates (such as pepperoni, hot dogs and luncheon meats) are known triggers for a migraine.

Missing Meals. If you delay a meal, your blood sugar could drop, triggering a headache.

Alcohol and caffeine. Drinks high in caffeine can cause headaches when caffeine level abruptly drops. Moreover, alcoholic drinks such as wine are known triggers, as well.

How Chiropractic Helps Relieve Migraines

Our chiropractors undergo extensive training to help our patients suffering from chronic migraine headaches. There are several ways a chiropractor can help relieve your pain. For example:

-Performing spinal manipulation (known as chiropractic adjustment) to improve joint and nervous system function and reduce joint restrictions or misalignments in the spine.

-Offering massage therapy

-Offering specific exercises & stretches

-Provide nutritional advice, recommending a change in diet and adding supplements

-Provide advice on posture, ergonomics and relaxation techniques.

At Austin Chiropractic & Rehab, each of our treatment plans are custom tailored to each and every one of our patients, designed to fit your specific needs. Call us today to book an appointment!
